Something's Fishy

Forgot to mention this tidbit in the last post.

While at the aquarium I ran into a group of about 20 blind people touring the aquarium with headsets on. It gave me pause. I understand that they were listening to information via headsets, but couldn't you do that, say, on the couch with a beer in hand? I've been pondering this for days!

I think it's like anyone else. You want to get out of the house, have an experience. Went to a hockey game with Dan and a friend Thurs. He pointed out that Lori and I did not stop talking the entire time, and I could have just stayed at home on the phone. But I can watch and talk at the same time! Not like I'm getting the finer points of hockey to begin with.

And, there's more to it than listening to the tape. You can talk to people who work there, ask questions. You can put your ear up against those cool bubble tubes in the lobby (I LOVE those things). Plus, you can smell the air, hear the dolphins splashing in their tank, and if I recall I think there's a part of the aquarium where you can pick up and hold little things like sea urchins and such.
Can't do that at home.

One of my best friends' mother is blind. This year in fact she's helping organize an annual blind persons' convention in Jacksonville. It lasts four or five days, and a big part of the convention are day trips. One of the trips is to the Okefenokee Swamp, for a guided canoe excursion. No, they won't see the gators or the beauty of the swamp, but they can hear the paddles in the water and the wind in the trees and the birds singing, and feel the water under the boat. I can't imagine what it's like to be blind. But I can imagine that it must be an awful lot more interesting to go out and do things than to sit at home and read or listen.

Hmm. Hard to disagree with J & the TD... Maybe they went there later.
