Healthcare Electrical Safety

I have to complete approximately 11-15 tests yearly for my company, and most jobs require me to complete similar tests when hired for my 3 month contract position. The result is, I can usually do the test cold or with minimal review of the information. This one really made me laugh in a "dur-da-dur" sort of way-as did the TB one but that's because I've taken too many TB tests. I challenge you to take my test-- so you too can know electricity dangers from a healthcare perspective. Good luck. I'll grade all comment responses for accuracy. :-)

True or False:

1. Electrical malfunction is the second leading cause of fires in the hospital.
2. An electric shock can kill you.
3. Rubber is a good conductor of electricity.
4. You cannot get a shock while standing on a rubber mat.
5. For shocks to be dangerous, the current must pass through vital organs.
6. An electrical arc can cause an explosion in an operating room.
7. Insulation on electrical cords is only for decorative purposes.
8. A cord that heats up when in use should be replaced.
9. To adapt a grounded plug to a 2-slot outlet, cut off the third prong.
10. Extension cords should not replace permanent wiring.
11. Allowing personal electrical appliances is a risk free way to make patients feel at home.
12. Patiens are at greater risk for electric shock when sweaty, incontinent or in a metal frame bed.
13. You should report any shock you receive on job, no matter how small.
14. Stay away from electrical equipment and outlets when working in wet areas.
15. It's okay to touch metal plumbing pipes when using a power tool.
16. Choose a heavy-duty metal ladder when doing electrical work over your head.
17. GFCI outlets should be checked regularly.
18. If an electrical device catches fire, you should grasp the plug and pull it out.
19. When working with a circuit breaker panel, keep one hand behind your back.
20. Use a dry chemical fire extinguisher rated ABC or BC to snuff out a small fire in an appliance outlet switch or light fixture.

I've been waiting for Lucky Bob to share his knowledge and answer these, but I guess I'll give it a shot first.

Well okay then.
1. It wouldn't be here if it wasn't true.
2. Unless you're Lightning Man!
3. Nuh-uh!
4. I think that's false.
5. Doesn't it inherently pass through all organs? I didn't think shocks were selective.
6. Sure. And on an airplane flight deck, too.
7. And it tastes yummy! No seriously, false.
8. I think so, yes.
9. No!
10. True! Though that doesn't stop the military.
11. If it wasn't false they wouldn't ask.
12. True. Gross, but true.
13. I'd be annoyed if people reported every shocking thing that happened in a day to me. But the hospital probably wants it.
14. True!
15. Well sure if you have saw through them. Duh.
16. Um, no. Choose a coworker instead. Do you, um, do heavy-duty electrical work at the hospital? Is that part of the speech pathologist job description?
17. True. The real question is, what does GFCI stand for?
18. Also don't forget to splash water on it!
19. What? Where did they get that from?
20. Frankly I'm surprised the hospital would encourage the use of snuff at all. It's a filthy habit.

Sorry I forgot to respond to this. My bad.

1. Sounds reasonable. Wonder if Smoking is the first.
2. Duh. And straighten out an incorrect heart rhythm.
3. Not really, but it will hold a static charge.
4. Unless you touch anything else while standing on a rubber mat.
5. As long as having a finger fried off isn’t a problem.
6. Cause there’s this stuff there called oxygen and other tanks of gasses.
7. No, cause I use it as hair extensions too.
8. Yes, cause some heart patients shouldn’t be excited by having hot cords around.
9. I have seen it done, but Fire Marshal Bill doesn’t like it.
10. Ok, but they cost so much less.
11. Especially when they bring the ceramics kiln in.
12. And while near electricity while covered in a conductive liquid.
13. Like getting respect from your boss. That’s a shock.
14. But what if you are using an electric floor buffer.
15. It’s ok, not wise, but ok. I prefer cutting the pipe with the power tool anyway.
16. It helps you find damaged insulation faster.
17. By shorting them with a bucket and an extension cord.
18. And then swing it around your head 3 times and let go.
19. So you can keep your fingers crossed.
20. You betcha, but be prepared to clean up power for months. It gets everywhere.

Is that what you wanted.
